The Wine Route winds its way between the coast and the hinterland, over 150 km in length, through striking countryside landscapes and characteristic villages of medieval origin. The territory, cradle of the Etruscan civilization, is covered with rolling hills and rocky coasts alternated with white beaches. The influence of sea winds gives unique scents and a particularly healthy air, it is the perfect place to spend a holiday dedicated to wellness, relaxation and good food.
The particular climate of the area allows the production of wines such as the famous Sassicaia, red produced near the coast and known internationally. There are also fine white wines with a fresh taste and very aromatic passito.
Coming from the north the 5 DOC zones, bordering the territory, which meet are: Terratico di Bibbona, Montescudaio, Bolgheri, Val di Cornia and the Island of Elba.
Montescudaio: the river Cecina affects the entire valley giving a particular freshness and a unique scent to the wines of the area. Cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, petit verdot are cultivated on the hills. Many producers of this area have also won several awards internationally for their elegant reds and excellent whites.
Bolgheri: vast fields of vines along the road framed by centuries-old cypresses also mentioned by Carducci in his poems. The area is the absolute protagonist of modern Italian enology, home to one of the best Tuscan wines: Sassicaia. Born in the ’70s by the experiment of Mario Incisa della Rocchetta with vines of cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon and merlot, today about 1140 hectares are dedicated to it.
Terratico di Bibbona: wine has been produced in the vineyards of the Nugola hills since time immemorial. The lands of the area, purely sandy, are particularly suited to this type of production. There are vineyards of Sangiovese and Trebbiano mixed with syrah, merlot and Vermentino. The area is experiencing a new renaissance, in fact alongside the traditional producers are approaching the great names of viticulture.
Val di Cornia: the mineral conformation of the territory largely reflects that of the Elbe, which is also reflected in the high quality of the wine. In fact, they produce wines with a solid character and red wines with an austere, deep appearance. Towards the town of Suvereto the productions of Notri and San Lorenzo are renowned. Another excellence of the area is extra-virgin olive oil
Elba Island: some of the best Italian passito are produced on the territory. Aleatico is one of the few wines that go well with chocolate, Moscato is the most widespread but very popular are also the white wines from Vermentino to Procanico. The vineyards, cultivated throughout the island, especially on the heights that slope down to the sea, give the splendid panorama of the Elba.
